Time for Provincial Status
Bahawalpur Division, with a population of approximately 13.4 million people and an area of about 45,588 km², is larger than more than 100 sovereign countries worldwide. Despite its vast size and strategic importance in South Punjab, the division faces serious development challenges. Literacy remains around 52.13%, with female literacy considerably lower than male literacy. Large rural and Cholistan desert regions continue to experience inadequate healthcare coverage, weak road connectivity, poor sanitation and drainage infrastructure, limited access to clean drinking water, and comparatively higher poverty levels. Agriculture remains the backbone of the regional economy, particularly cotton, wheat, sugarcane, dates, and mango production; however, youth unemployment, child malnutrition, and uneven public service delivery continue to hinder socio-economic development across the division.
